Parkinson s disease -- are some people predisposed to it

It is well known that Parkinson's disease mostly affects older people. But apart from that, what other factors indicate higher chances of developing this debilitating illness?

Let's take age itself as the starting point, because there are some nuances that are not generally known. In line with popular perceptions, about 90% of people with the illness are over 60 years old.

This is true even if you consider the age at which the symptoms first appear. Not even 10% of cases are diagnosed in adults under age 40. Most of the fresh diagnoses are in those above age 60.

However, that's not the whole story.

Among those over 60, the risk goes up from age 60 to age 75. After that, it drops sharply. In other words, someone who is 85 years old is less likely to get Parkinson's disease than someone who is 70, statistically speaking. This may seem surprising to most people.

Let's look at it from another angle. The above statistics apply to those who have been diagnosed with the illness. If we take what is called Parkinsonism (meaning, symptoms of Parkinson's that have other causes, or symptoms that may develop into the illness itself) into account, fully 15% of those between 60 and 75 have it. And between 75 and 84 years of age, an amazing 30% have the illness.

At the moment, around 3% of the population over age 65 is affected by the disease. But this percentage is estimated to double over the next four decades.

Age obviously has an impact on the disease. What other factors exist?

Gender is evidently another one. It is estimated that men have about twice as much risk of developing Parkinson's as women. This applies to every age group.

Researchers theorize that the female hormone estrogen is responsible for the lower incidence of the disease among women. There are two facts to support this view.

The first is that women who have undergone hysterectomies have a somewhat higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Secondly, women who are on hormone replacement therapies tend to have a lower incidence of the condition. These facts seem to imply that estrogen does play a role in preventing Parkinson's.

The illness also seems to progress faster in men than in women. In terms of symptoms, women tend to be prone to disturbances in their gait, while men are more at risk of tremors and rigidity.

Heredity appears to play a role in the disease. Someone whose siblings who have developed Parkinson's disease before the age 40 is at greater risk of falling victim to the illness. However, if the siblings develop the disease only in later years, heredity does not seem to play a prominent role.

There are differences among races in the incidence of Parkinson's, so ethnicity does appear to play a role. Caucasians are at greater risk than Asian Americans or African Americans. Some research indicates that although races other than Caucasians have lower overall risk, they may carry a higher risk of other types of Parkinsonism which involves problems with the thinking process.

Apart from the above, some evidence suggests that caffeine might offer protection against this disease, to an extent. Drinking coffee regularly, it seems, is a useful preventive measure.

As can be seen, some factors do seem to create a higher risk of a person developing Parkinson's disease. Researchers are digging deep for more clues that may one day lead to a full understanding of this condition.

Will grading principal improve pittsburgh schools

Pittsburgh Schools have not shown significant improvement as measured by the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) assessment. Due to the district’s inability to show improvements mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act for 4 consecutive years, Pittsburgh Schools were required to make significant changes in the 2006-2007 school year. Those changes included closing 22 schools, opening accelerated learning academies, and adding more k-8 schools.

Superintendent Mark Roosevelt felt the “slow improvement” of Pittsburgh Schools also required some other big changes, starting at the top. Pittsburgh Schools will institute a district wide administrator training and management plan called the Pittsburgh Urban Leadership System for Excellence (PULSE). PULSE will require greater support for new principals, enhanced training for potential administrators, and tougher standards on principal evaluations. But the most notable component is the plan to eliminate annual step increases, and institute a pay for performance plan, for all Pittsburgh Schools’ principals.

Pittsburgh Schools applied for an $8.9 million federal grant to fund the program, and anticipate a response in June of this year. If the grant is approved, the traditional step increases Pittsburgh Principals are used to will be replaced by a $2000 increase in base pay. That would be tied to progress in meeting 28 performance-based goals. The other part of the incentive would include bonuses of up to $10,000 for demonstrated academic growth among students. This would position Pittsburgh Schools’ principals to make much more than with the step increase system.

Pittsburgh Schools initiated the pay for performance plan last year with the principals of the eight new accelerated learning academies. However, it is too soon to tell how much the students have benefited in that short period of time. Pittsburgh Schools have shown very small, very slow, improvement in meeting the AYP targets. Overall advances of 3% in 5th grade math and a record 9% in 8th grade reading do little to put Pittsburgh Schools where they need to be.

Is the pay for performance plan the answer? A rating scale using “rudimentary”, “emerging”, “proficient” and “accomplished” will be used in areas of academics, community relations and academic success. Pittsburgh Schools is one of many urban districts to grapple with the issues of meeting rising academic standards. The question of offering both administrators and teachers merit pay has bee a hot topic between unions and academic observers for decades. While the issue of bonus pay for performance has not often been used with Pittsburgh Schools’ teachers, if it is successful with the principals, teachers may not be far behind.

Will it work? Opponents have suggested that the academic world operates differently than the corporate one, and that incentives won’t work. Others insist that the lack of performance-based pay is one of the biggest problems with Pittsburgh Schools and public education as a whole. Stay tuned. Grading principals may be the most notable reform Pittsburgh Schools institute this year.

The struggle to create a powerful crm system

Almost every business owner is aware of the importance of an effective customer relationship management system in the modern marketplace. But still there is a struggle to create a powerful CRM system that works and is affordable.

Marketing departments fully understand how important a good CRM system is and that is must include pertinent customer information such as email, phone, and web info. Sales departments also fully understand the importance of quality CRM software to build a strong customer database.

However the message of how important a CRM system that unifies all departments seems to get lost. You would assume that CRM experts or IT personal would be quick to point this out however many don’t assuming that the business owner knows this.

You might be surprised at just how many poor CRM software choices are made because business owners either don’t understand what it is that is needed for a successful CRM system or are trying to keep costs down.

Surprisingly it is common for the companies that can most afford it to spend a great deal of money on their CRM software systems. For example recently I had some dealings with a nation wide cellular company that had been promoting several packages and bonuses to encourage. My first bill arrives about 45 days after I had signed up and to my surprise I had not received the promised free minutes and activation.

When I called no one at the company was familiar with the discount package that I had been offered in an effort to steal clients from another cell provider. Because of their very poor CRM system not only did not all staff know what packages had been offered they also didn’t know which customers had taken those offers.

This is a company that makes over a billion dollars in sales every year and they are running a pathetic example of a CRM yet they could afford the very best which would be beneficial to customer and staff. This scenario isn’t that unusual.

Customer Relationship Management Software is a powerful tool that offers all kinds of tools. Costs can range from just a couple of dollars to thousands of dollars. And although you might be a bit shy about the initial costs the long term benefits and increased profits are certainly something to talk about.

If there’s a lesson to be learned here, it’s that the larger companies have a lot to learn and that the smaller companies are much quicker to react to market demands and invest in products that will improve customer service, keep adequate potential customer and existing customer records, and to provide information to help their business grow and prosper, and increase profits.

Your CRM software should provide all departments with the information they need. Sales departments will want history of sales and inquiries as well as solutions. Marketing departments will be interested in the type of products that are selling and how much of each product. Accounting departments will be interested in profits and in accounts receivables. And management will be interested in seeing everything about their company.

Although there is a bit of a struggle to create a powerful CRM system that’s affordable and provides the needed business tools and information. The right CRM software is the most powerful tool your business can have in this modern day era.

Putting the living into your living room furniture

What kind of room is your living room? Is it that kind of room with all of the fancy furniture and accessories, possibly antiques or family heirlooms, where no one dares to enter, that is meant for "company"? Or is your home's living room the place that might be considered the family room, the place where everyone gathers, family and friends alike, to watch television, play games, entertain, talk, or just relax? Whatever the purpose of the living room is in your home, the living room furniture and accessories is a necessary (and often expensive) component in setting a certain preferred mood or theme, and should be representative of you and your family's personality.

Most families spend the vast majority of their time together in the living room. That is most likely because that is where all of the "fun" things to do in the house are, like the television, stereo, perhaps even game systems. Next to the kitchen, the living room is the heart of the home. That is why it is important that your living room furniture be durable, accommodating (meaning that there is enough seating for family and guests), and comfortable.

When furnishing your living room, you should think about what your family uses it for. Do you primarily watch television in there? Do you merely entertain company in the form of good conversation in there? Do you do a lot of reading or other activities such as sewing or crafts in there? Will guests be sleeping in there? Do you play games together in there? Deciding how you want to use the room will help you choose the appropriate pieces of furniture, and save you money in the long run.

The basic living room furniture pieces are usually a sofa, one or more chairs (of various types), a coffee table, maybe some end tables, and lighting. When you are looking for a sofa, determine if you will be accommodating overnight guests in your living room. If so, you need to explore the sleeper sofa. Sleeper sofas have come a long way from the thin and lumpy mattress with a bar in your back, and provide a very comfortable place for your guests to slumber peacefully. If you don't need a sleeper sofa, then think about the size your sofa needs to be. There are large sectionals that accommodate several people at once. There are sofa and love seat combinations that allow you more freedom in furniture arrangement. Determine what will fit in your room, and purchase accordingly.

When shopping for living room furniture, you need to determine if you need other types of seating besides a sofa. There are cushiony, comfy chairs and there are more formal occasional chairs. Depending on the activities that take place in your living room, the furniture should accommodate accordingly. There should also be enough seating to accommodate a good number of people, if you have a large family or entertain guests regularly.

Another type of living room furniture that is commonly seen is some kind of table. Beginning with the coffee table, you can add surfaces to play games, hold drinks and knick-knacks, even a place for someone to prop their weary feet upon. Coffee tables are often large enough to place sofas and chairs around, and provide a multitude of functions. There are also end tables, which provide a base for lighting fixtures, knick-knacks, magazines, and often act as accent pieces. If you want to use your living room for game playing, and the room is large enough, you can also consider a small game table in a corner.

Lighting, though not considered furniture, is a vital accessory to include with your living room furniture. If you plan on reading, crafting, or playing games in your living room, then you will need good lighting. Ambient lighting is also nice in the living room for entertaining and relaxing.

No living room furniture setting is complete today without the entertainment center. It provides a place to store all of your home entertainment equipment, including the television, stereo, game systems, VCR, DVD player, and speakers. These come in a variety of sizes, colors, and types, and also come in a variety of prices. Again, what you buy depends on your needs and the size of your room.

When you are furnishing and decorating your living room, there is no need to use a particular theme. As long as the colors and patterns coordinate and follow your family's style, it will be a great room to be in. By accessorizing with pictures, wall hangings, shelving, plants, or other personal touches, your living room will be a comfortable place that your family will enjoy spending time in. Your living room furniture is merely the basis upon which family memories are made.

Tips for preparing for your high school graduation part 1

Preparing for your high school graduation is one of the most exciting, rewarding and also, emotional times in your entire life. Faced with many important and life-changing decisions such as work, college, and living arrangements, getting through graduation itself can be hectic and frustrating. However, there are several simple things that will better prepare you for this transitional period in life.

It’s a wise idea to begin preparing for your high school graduation as soon as your senior year begins, if not sooner. A meeting with the school’s guidance counselor at the beginning of the year will answer questions about graduation eligibility requirements. It’s not uncommon for students to be surprised at the end of their school year when they learn that they haven’t fulfilled all of the requirements needed to graduate. The requirements that are set forth by the schools may vary by location but generally state that a certain number of classes or credits must be completed before a student is given their diploma or even allowed to attend the graduation ceremony in some schools.

Viewing your transcripts before you have to think about sending them off to colleges and universities will give you a better picture of your academic performance thus far. In addition, this will allow you to see if there are areas that need improvement during your senior year. Also, keep close tabs on your GPA or Grade Point Average, as this will be one of the most important deciding factors for being accepted to a college or university.

After taking care of the academic portion of your graduation experience, you’ll want to focus on the lighter side such as the celebrations, and the parties. Many graduating seniors choose to send out pictures and announcements letting everyone know they are about to graduate even if they aren’t having a party. If a graduate is sending out notices just to spread the good news and isn’t looking for gifts, then be sure to include “No gifts please” at the bottom of the announcements to avoid confusion and also to follow proper etiquette.

Ski and skiing a brief overview

Skiing is a favorite pastime of many people regardless of where they live. Ski vacations are becoming one of the most popular vacation themes and with ski resorts located world-wide, it’s not difficult to take up the sport.

The origins of skiing are a bit confusing. Many different cultures developed ski-like mechanisms that resemble what we refer to today as “skis.” One was the snowshoe which could be covered by different materials, depending on the owner’s preference. One covering was fur and another version had moccasins attached to the top of the snowshoe so all that was required of the user was to slip their foot into it and off they’d go.

Skis have come a long way in design since those times and there is a brand, size and style for everyone regardless of experience. Depending on your skill level you can purchase skis made from different materials. Some skis still have a wooden core. The wood chosen in the manufacture of skis is normally either spruce or fir. Some skis have a combination of both woods. The middle core is normally surrounded by a high performance material; something that will enable the skier to glide the hill almost effortlessly. Two commonly used materials are glass and titanium. As a person gets a feel for skiing and the equipment they generally choose the type of ski that best suits them. It’s not uncommon for very experienced skier to have custom made equipment.

Some of the newer types of skis are shaped a bit differently than the traditional models. They are designed to be a bit longer and instead of being perfectly straight they are curved. The curves are meant to make the experience more enjoyable and less strenuous on the legs.

The skis aren’t the only things that you need when you hit the slopes. Ski poles are essential for the novice skier. They afford a sense of balance while you are learning the basics of skiing. Many veteran skiers forego the use of the poles while others never leave the hill without them.

Helmets may not look great, but they are generally advised if you are just learning how to ski. They offer you protection in case you take a tumble and if skiing is a new experience for you, falling down is to be expected. Helmets are also recommended for children. Children can have accidents while skiing and knowing that they are as protected as possible is very reassuring.

The type of boots and bindings you choose is dependent a great deal on personal preference. There are many styles and designs available and a good fit is really important. The better the fit the more control you have.

Once you’ve got your ski gear it’s time to pick a spot to indulge in your favorite winter pastime. North America has many superb areas for skiers and most of them are very affordable.

One of the most popular ski destinations in the United States is the state of Colorado. Colorado has literally dozens of ski facilities including several located within the Aspen Mountains. In addition to offering incredible skiing conditions, the area itself is beautiful.

Another state that is known for its skiing is Utah. Utah is home to the Rocky Mountains and people flock there each winter to take in the skiing. It’s a particular favorite for families as they offer ski hills that fit every member of the family’s experience.

You may not have to travel far to enjoy a day of skiing though. Many states have conditions that make skiing fun including California, New York, Vermont and Montana. With a little research and some planning you can have a perfect ski trip with memories that will last long after you reach the bottom of the hill.

What is anonymous surfing

What Anonymous Surfing Is

People who have concerns about privacy issues that arise from surfing the web are not without a means

to fix the problem. Anonymous surfing allows users to surf the web from any computer and hide their identity such as IP address, location (city/state/country), and browser information. It also allows employees to surf from their work PC while protecting the company's computer information. Anonymous surfing can protect the user from being identified as having surfed the web when they're not supposed to for example from their place of employment. Some of the Anonymous Surfing services will hide user's URL's along with their website traffic. The information is hidden within a Virtual Private Network. This is very effective when people use broadband and went to ensure nobody can peruse their personal information.

Additional Provisions of Anonymous Surfing

Anonymous surfing not only provides privacy protection it gives users a host of other bonuses. Pop-ups become a thing of the past since anonymous surfing often blocks them. Also, users don't have to be concerned with cookies and home-page hijackings because many anonymous surfing sites take care of them. Other items that anonymous surfing takes care of are: home-page hijackings, adware, spyware, and keeps people from getting a computer virus. Often bandwidth is decreased which increases the speed of the Internet.

Will it Cost Me?

Many anonymous surfing services are free of charge. However, they do offer users manifold services that do come with a charge. Some of the sites offer the opportunity to store bookmarks, no limitations placed upon downloads, ability to have file extension, assurance of prime access even during times of high volume and traffic numbers, and the ability to circumvent the cache. Others offer the convenience of email, IM service, and chatting capability.

Why aren't More People Utilizing Anonymous Surfing?

Alot of people don't know about anonymous surfing or don't yet feel the true need for privacy as they should. Anonymous surfing goes far in protecting users and their information while they move around online. Also, alot of people aren't aware that anonymous surfing exacts or that they truly have a need to protect themselves by concealing their IP address and other vital information.

Which Type of Anonymous Surfing Sites are Out There?

@nonymouse Anonymous Web Surfing gives users the ability to type into a URL, and the web page will be extracted for the user. Proxify eliminates ads, cookies, scripts, information from referrers, and the option to hide page titles exists as well. The cloak permits users to surf on sites and while doing so it removes Java code that the site may attempt to place on one's webpage. Also, the cloak removes images and cookies.

Minneapolis school district honors volunteers

The B. J. Reed Award

Created in 1988, the B. J. Reed Award recognizes the work of volunteers in the Minneapolis Schools. The B. J. Reed Award was named in honor of Batty Jane Reed who founded the Community Resource Volunteer Program in 1965. B. J. Reed was a Minneapolis School educator who went on to be an author, poet and mentor. Originally the Community Resource Volunteer Program was intended to give entertainers, craftspeople, professionals, civic leaders and other working adults the opportunity to share their time and skills by becoming a part of the school curriculum giving classroom presentations. The CRV Program later expanded its focus and became the WISE Resource Volunteer Program. This program aims to have volunteers engaged in various functions across the Minneapolis Schools. B. J. Reed retired in 1981 but continued to be an integral part of the WISE Resource Volunteer Program until her death in 1995. The B. J. Reed Award is given annually to someone who has made outstanding contributions to Minneapolis students and the community.

Lawrence Looking Elk the 2006 B. J. Reed Award Recipient

The Sullivan Elementary School, one Minneapolis School, has gained a great deal from the volunteer work of Mr. Lawrence Looking Elk. Lawrence Looking Elk has become an almost permanent member of the Sullivan School community. The work he does at the school includes, but is certainly not limited to, volunteering in the Media Center, out on the playground during recess and in the lunchroom during breakfast and lunch. Lawrence Looking Elk has established a bond with the parents, teachers and students at Sullivan School. The parents of the school have been overwhelmed by their children love and devotion to Lawrence Looking Elk, who has developed the student’s trust in him based on his kind, gentle and understanding approach toward them. Lawrence Looking Elk has worked closely with the student’s in Sandy Chapman’s classroom at the Sullivan School. Ms. Chapman attributes many of the scholastic gains her students have made to Lawrence Looking Elk and his work in the classroom. Lawrence Looking Elk has volunteered in the Sullivan Elementary School for three years and donated nearly 3100 hours of his time.

Lawrence Looking Elk is active in other ways in the Minneapolis Schools. He volunteers with many organizations including the Parent Committee for Indian Education, is Chairman of the Indian Education Board, and South High School Site Council (PUSH). In addition to volunteer work with these groups, he vigorously works to raise funds for activities for Native American Students. Lawrence Looking Elk’s experience from being in the schools and classrooms gives him the insight to know what changes are needed and he has the tenacity to work for the changes in the Minneapolis Schools that benefits all students. Lawrence Looking Elk received the B. J. Reed Award at June 13th meeting of the Minneapolis Board of Education. Last month, Looking Elk was also honored by his colleagues and friends at the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis.

The three different types of income you must know

Let us take a look at the different types of income. They are:

1. Earned Income

obtained from working for someone or a company.

2. Passive Income

income generated from business.

3. Portfolio Income

income generated from investments in paper assets.

Letґs have a closer look:

Earned Income

Earned Income comes from having a job in a company or in someone else’s business. You get paid for your time and services rendered. In the previous section, we mentioned that workers work just hard enough not to get fired and employers pay just enough for workers not to quit.

This indicates that the income an employee can generate from working for an employer is limited.

There is the possibility that an employee may devote extra effort thinking the employer will pay him/her more. It is a rare possibility particularly when business is difficult, but possible.

And even if it happens, it is still limited. Whatever additional profit gained by the employer as a result of the employee’s extra effort, the employer will get the bigger “slice of the pie.” You are, in effect, making someone else rich through your added effort.

Don’t think I’m discouraging this. It is a good act. I’m just stating a fact. It’s likely that you will be telling yourself mentally: “Hey, that’s not fair.” Fair or not, that’s the way life is, when you work for money.

If you are an employee, you get your money or paycheck after everything else. It is earned income, less taxes and everything else deductible, before money reaches your hand. And if ever the money reaches your hand, the next place it is bound to go is to pay your bills. If the amount is not enough, you are bound to borrow, which makes you debt-ridden if it accumulates.

Now, this is one big mistake. Don’t ever get debt-ridden. It is the quicksand to poverty.

Earned Income is a safe way to generate an income. There is not much thinking to do.

Except for a few high paying, high profile jobs, your work is mostly concentrated on a few things where you keep repeating the same functions. Unconsciously, this discourages creativity, so boredom starts to set in.

It is because of this boredom that getting to work every morning is such a drag and you keep on looking forward to weekends, holidays, and vacations.

Unless you really love what you do without consideration to the income it generates, or unless you are highly paid, or unless there is a lot more to learn in your job, or unless financial security is of no importance to you, there is no reason for you to stay long in the “rat race.” The earlier it is to get out of the trap, the better chances you will attain financial success.

Passive Income

Passive income is generated from businesses. You can sell products or offer services, or a combination thereof.

Examples are buying/selling real estate, trading merchandise as in wholesaling and retailing, etc. In many cases, you need not be physically present in your place of business. There are also small businesses like vending machines where you hardly require an employee to visit those machines for refill (since you can do it yourself).

You can also go with franchising; either be a franchiser or a franchisee. The list is endless as long as you do what you love to do.

The beauty of going into your own business is that you work for you, not for someone else. You enrich yourself, not someone else. Your time is disciplined but more flexible because you can make your own schedule.

Another advantage of going into business, especially in your own corporation, is that you earn and spend before tax is deducted, unlike being an employee where you are taxed before you spend.

Portfolio Income

Portfolio income, just like passive income, is making money work for you.

Portfolio income is generated from paper assets like bonds, stock market, certificate of deposits, and mutual funds. They are called paper assets because literally, they are businesses that revolve on papers.

It is in portfolio income where financial knowledge is of vital importance. Your intellect interacting with creativity can either unmake or make you rich.

Time for Action to make money work at home!

Now that you know the different types of income, it’s time to take some action!

Receiving earned income is fine, but your primary aim should be to get passive and portfolio income as much as possible. Utilize earned income to its fullest until you finally reach your goal of earning only passive and portfolio income.

What is the best color for selling a home

Love at first sight is a concept that applies to the real estate market. So, what is the best house color to sell your home to a love struck buyer?

What Is the Best Color For Selling A Home?

When you go to social events, do you make an effort to snazzy yourself up? Of course you do. The simply fact is attraction is a key factor in forming relationships and the same applies to your house. When you put the house on the market, you need to make it look good for the dates with potential buyers. The color of your house can make all the difference.

First, there is no absolutely correct answer to the best color. Instead, the decision depends on the makeup of your home and the surrounding landscape. Let’s take a look at some issues:

1. Whatever color you choose, make sure it doesn’t clash with the other homes in the neighborhood. An otherwise appropriate color could end up making your house an eye-sore.

2. The Roof. What color is the roof on your home? If it is a red tile roof, off-whites are probably going to be the best choice. Dark green will not. Unless you are going to invest money in a new roof, make sure the paint color doesn’t clash with it.

3. Highlights. If there is a particular part of your house that should be emphasized, used light colored paint around it to draw attention.

4. Hide It! Conversely, if there are parts of the house that are mundane, use darker colors to draw attention away from them.

5. On large flat surfaces, such as the side of a garage, keep in mind the color you choose will have a washed out appearance.

Now we get to the fun part. After considering the above issues, make a preliminary list of colors and buy small cans of each color. In a private area of the house, start applying samples strokes a couple feet long and a foot or so wide. Try to paint examples in both shaded areas and those exposed to the sun.

Do not immediately judge the results of your experiments. Instead, wait a few hours for the paint to dry and then start comparing. Dry paint takes on a very different appearance than wet paint.

Once the paint is dry, take a long look at each sample. You will typically find the colors look much different than you thought they would. You may find one color is perfect or you may find something a little different would be best. Either way, you’ll have come up with the best house color to sell your home.

Creativity and original thinking suggestions from personal experience

Why is it that ideas can flow so freely sometimes and then be as elusive as a leaf floating down a stream? I've wondered that a lot when I was under a deadline, either at school or more recently for my livelihood.

Over the years I have used a few tricks to get me unstuck when I absolutely had to be creative at that moment with no option of waiting. The goal is to get the mind off the track it is on...that's why you feel stuck. Your mind is closed in on one solution, one path....as if it's a horse wearing blinders.

The first order of business is to relax and know that the good ideas are just waiting to come out. Remind yourself that you are a creative genius. Your mind is a miracle and it's actually at your command. Belief is important, just as it is with any successful endeavor. It's also time for a state change, meaning a physical change of state. Go walk around the block. Execute some jumping jacks. I like to play a couple good dancing tunes and have some fun with it. Standing, stretching and walking around the room may be enough.

You should be in a more positive mental frame of mind now. You know you can come up with some ideas and you are even looking forward to the process. You might do a quick review of your project, not a lengthy review. Flip though the plans, proposals, pictures, ad copy, whatever.

Do a small word association game: write down one word having to do with your project. For example, perhaps I need to create a landscape piece for a client. I'll write the word landscape at the top of the paper, then quickly write down words that come to my mind. I'll have a list of words about color or actual places or kinds of foliage or weather, etc. You see, even though my project is visual, I use word association to get ideas. Try this with several aspects of you project/problem. Does your project have a name? Use that name for a word association exercise.

If I still need more input, I'll ask myself some questions. Who is this for? What is the goal? What if I changed the whole thing? What would it look like? What really matters? I'll even ask myself questions like: What if I don't get this done? At least I'll find out how important it is!

OK, so I need a bit more help. Here's where I'll lean back in my chair, close my eyes and take a few minutes to visualize. What am I visualizing? I'm visualizing delivering the project. Why? Perhaps I will see into the future as to what the final product looks like! Remember, this is a game. Have fun and you might come up with something really insightful.

I know there's lots of good ideas flowing, but just in case you need some more help. I can only remember having to do something like this once. A good idea usually comes in the first or second exercise. You want at least 6 small (maybe 3x3) pieces of paper. Take your lists you just wrote and tear them into pieces so you can still read them. Better yet, you can create some more words and/or pictures. Use shapes or colors to represent parts of your project. Play mix-n-match with these papers. Shuffle them. Drop them on the floor and see where they end up. You could even cut out relevant magazine pictures and do this activity. You'll already have some great ideas, so you probably won't have to go this far!

Relaxing is very important. Stress tightens everything including your creativity. Relaxation helps those creative juices to flow. Get comfortable and enjoy the ride.

The ultimate wildlife experience - game viewing in south africa

Of the hundreds of awesome activities that South Africa has on offer, probably the most popular activity on offer is Game Viewing. Game viewing on any of the many game reserves in South Africa provides an opportunity to see South African wild life in all their beauty in their natural habitat. On a self-drive expedition, with a guide, on horseback, on elephant back – whatever your preference, you’re assured of a memorable game viewing experience.

Probably the most well known game viewing location in South Africa is the Kruger National Park. Home to South Africa’s Big 5, the Kruger National Park offers an incredible self-drive route through the open veld where you’ll see countless variations of buck, zebra’s, giraffe, leopard, lion, springbok, cheetah, eland and countless others. (There is a check list available at: sa-venues. com/wildlife/). Self-driven game viewing trips offer the benefits of being able to determine the pace of you journey, however without a guide who knows the area well, you might miss out on seeing something special.

The Kruger National Parks game viewing isn’t limited only to self-drive expeditions. The park has been very well developed to cater for many different preferences. Guided groups will be taken out into the bushveld, where you’ll camp overnight and experience the bushveld at night with all its fascinating sounds and sights.

The Eastern Cape offers much in the way of game viewing. Whilst most game reserves offer Big 5 game viewing, the popular Addo Elephant Park just outside Port Elizabeth lays claim to being the only park in South Africa that offers Big 7 game viewing! The 372 000 ha park is home to all of the South African Big 5 and in addition, there’s a 120 000 ha marine zone where you can spot the majestic whale and the much feared great white shark.

10 Minutes outside of Port Elizabeth, is the Seaview Lion and Game Park. Although it’s doesn’t offer game viewing of all the South African Big 5, it does offer the incredible opportunity to interact and play with lion cubs. R40 will get you up to about 30 minutes playtime with either the very young cubs, or the slightly older and more boisterous cubs. It’s an unforgettable experience and definitely worth doing. As you drive through the park, you’ll pass by giraffe, zebra and all sorts of buck. The Seaview Lion park also offers the rare opportunity to view the unique White Lion as well as the beautiful tiger.

Kwa Zulu Natal also has many choices for exceptional game viewing. The St Lucia National Park offers not only beautiful game viewing, but is also known as a birder’s paradise because of a the enormous variety of birdlife. Swaziland’s game viewing is one of the top in the country because of its raw beauty and rugged terrain. The Swaziland game viewing parks are not overly commercial and thus offer game viewing in its most natural form.

One of the hardest animals to spot when you’re game viewing in South Africa, is the leopard. Because of its reclusive nature – spending most of the day in the trees out of sight – game viewing trips don’t often get to see this incredible animal. However the game viewing parks in Mpumalanga offer some of the highest concentrations of leopard per square kilometer in South Africa. A day or night spent in most of the game parks in Mpumalanga is bound to include a number of leopard sightings – definitely worth the trip

Game viewing in South Africa offers more diversity of wildlife and more excitement than any other country in the world – make sure you don’t miss the wonders of game viewing in South Africa.

Five ways to continually grow your affiliate checks

The promise of earning profits without really doing much of anything has enticed a lot of people towards affiliate marketing. But does affiliate marketing really work this way?

As an affiliate, all that is required of you is to simply place the merchant's ad on your website. Then after that, you virtually do nothing but wait for anyone to click on the merchant's ad and later collect your profits. Easy, right? Well, not quite often. Many affiliates earn almost nothing from their affiliate programs simply because they do nothing. Remember that affiliate marketing is but another form of marketing, and you'll definitely need to market your merchant's product for you to earn something.

Successful affiliates in any affiliate program simply don't sit there and wait for money to come. Why? Because there is no money in simply sitting and waiting. If you want to be successful in affiliate marketing and if you want to continually grow your affiliate checks, you've got to do something. Think of ways on how to promote your merchant's business and products better. Think of ways on how to induce other people to click on the link or ad provided to you by your merchant. Think of ways on how to make your affiliate sales increase!

So if you're new in affiliate marketing and you try to follow the easy go lucky pit that most unsuccessful affiliate marketers follow, then you're definitely on the wrong track. But we're not advising you to stop right there. No. Rather, we want you to take some steps to make your affiliate program work better and gain more commissions for you. How? Here are a few guidelines that may help you to continually grow your affiliate checks:

1) Become an expert on your affiliate product.

You can promote your merchant's product better if you know a lot of things about it. To become an expert, the best thing you can do is purchase your merchant's product yourself. This way, you can tell your customers about your first-hand experience using the product. You can even write a testimonial or a personal endorsement ad about it. But if any condition does not permit you to purchase the product, you can at least make a thorough research about it.

2) Host your own website.

Or at least have a domain name that is short and easy to remember. You certainly wouldn't expect a visitor to remember a very long and incomprehensible URL. And if that's so, you also wouldn't expect him to visit your website any time soon. That means less traffic for your page and the less chance for your affiliate ads and links to be clicked.

It is also a good idea to create a private website and offer access to it to anybody who clicks on any of your affiliate ads. Visitors usually get interested with these private websites. Private websites also gives you a venue to promote your back-end affiliate products.

3) Write your own affiliate ads.

Many merchants usually wouldn't mind if you write and design your own ads for their products, for as long as you ask permission from them and present them your ad before posting it on your site. This gives you a greater advantage over a lot of other affiliates who must be advertising the same affiliate products.

4) Participate in chat rooms, discussion boards, and forums related to your product.

If you use to ignore them before, then it is time for you to start focusing your attention on them. You can start your own chat or join an existing chat related to your product. You don't have to promote your affiliate product at once, but find the chance to advertise and promote it as you go along. The same would be true for message boards, discussion boards and forums.

5) Create a free ezine or newsletter.

Ezines and newsletters are periodical publications whose aim is to inform a group of people about a certain subject. In your ezines and newsletters, you don't always have to promote your merchant's product for this may greatly annoy your subscribers. Rather, find a way to insert your affiliate ads and links on some portions of the letter. Also, don't forget to promote your ezine or newsletter on your website.

These are but a few guidelines on how you can increase your affiliate sales and continually grow your affiliate checks. Sure there can be a lot of other tips that out there, and if you think they would work, we won't discourage you from following them. What's important is that you be able to find a way to: attract more traffic to your site, induce your visitors to click on the ads on your site, and be able to promote your merchant's products even outside the boundary of your website. If you can do these, there's no reason for you to fail in affiliate marketing.

The secret of the void

All Alone in Here

Several years ago I had a quiet but intense experience at the wedding of a close friend. I was early, and as I sat at my table I watched the other guests entering the room. One came in elated, dancing like a performer on stage. Another was withdrawn, inward, as if mulling over some sadness or pain. Some were eating, some talking, some laughing and some sitting quietly.

But what I saw – with an almost painful intensity – was that each one of us, no matter what we were doing or with whom we were doing it, was essentially in our own world. Not necessarily lonely, but alone, our thoughts, longings, our selves on some core level separate from everyone around us.

Once, many years ago, my four-year-old cousin was standing in the living room with her mother and grandmother when she suddenly burst out, “I’m all alone in here!” When her mother hastened to reassure her that they were right there with her in the room, she responded, “No, in here. I’m all alone in here.”

Every human being experiences this essential aloneness. Sometimes we’re not aware of it at all, and sometimes the awareness, like it was for my little cousin, is profound. But whatever the case, it’s always there.

What Conceals Reveals

Kabbalah explains that in truth there is nothing but G-d. Everything that exists, whether physical or spiritual, is simply a highly limited expression of its Creator, somewhat like each of your thoughts and actions is a little expression of you.

The infinite light of G-d, as its name implies, is overwhelming, filling every space. Left unmuted, this all-encompassing light would make it impossible for anything else to exist, just like a ray of light cannot exist as a separate entity within the body of the sun. So, in order to allow for Creation in all of its limitless details and forms, G-d had to conceal His own infinite light. This concealment, known as tzimtzum, is what enables us to be. And more, it allows us to experience ourselves as real, solid, and the center of our universe.

This ‘Big Lie” – this core illusion of aloneness and solidity – is what allows us to exist as separate and unique human beings. In its raw, unrectified state, it cuts us off from the truth. But ultimately we are destined to see through the walls, transcend the illusion, and fulfill our potential as uniquely magnificent expressions of the Divine.

The Sound of the Void

The illusion is powerful, but not total. If we were completely cut off from an awareness of what lies beyond, chances are we would be perfectly content. There would be no reason to question ourselves or our existence, no drive to continuously experience more.

But we are not cut off completely. A glimmer of the Infinite light from before Creation surrounds and permeates each person who walks this earth. This light is what gives us the profound sense that there is something else out there. Only the something doesn’t always feel like an actual something. It often feels like something missing - a void.

This void, this missing, hovers at the edge of our consciousness, threatening our comfortable sense of solidity and bringing with it an essential longing for…. well, for something. Something more.

This sensation of something missing is actually the glimmer of something that is there, but too vast and amazing to be perceived by our ordinary senses. But as physical beings in a physical world, we are not naturally inclined to relate to it in this esoteric way. In fact, the non-physical all too often makes us feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. So, instead of slowly allowing our eyes to adjust to this more subtle light, we avoid the experience altogether, or seek to fill the void with physical things.

The subtle awareness of the void pulls us relentlessly toward the next high, the next success, the more exciting relationship, the bigger, flashier toy. The feelings it triggers - like sadness, depression, anxiety or dissatisfaction – drive us to eat too much, drink too much, work too much, spend too much, need too much; in short, whatever it takes to avoid facing the threatening insubstantiality of it all.

But, as uncomfortable and threatening as it can feel, if you are willing to face the discomfort, to stop running and listen, you can begin to explore the secret of the void, to expand your ability to see and hear things that lie outside your normal range.

Like a beautiful dream whose impression lingers, like a song that stirs memories and feelings from long ago, like a perfume that lingers faintly in the air, the music of the void can stir forgotten memories and open your heart. It can speak to you of where you came from, where you are destined to go and who you are destined to be.

A Deeper Level of Life

In Hebrew, each letter of the alphabet has a gematria, a numerical equivalent. Whenever the letters of one word are numerically equivalent to the letters of a different word, it points to a secret relationship between the two.

It is fascinating to know that the Hebrew word for void, challal, is exactly numerically equivalent to the word chaim, which means life.

The message is simple. In being willing to embrace the vulnerability, to stop running away and instead stay present and expand your ability to see, you can begin to reconnect with what has been concealed from you, the part of you that is most truly and infinitely alive.

Eating in Bed – Maintaining the Illusion of Being Solid

Most evenings, after I’m finished with the tasks of the day, I reward myself by getting in bed and relaxing under the covers with a book. It feels secure and cozy, reassuringly solid and safe. And to further enhance the comforting feeling I almost always take a little bedtime snack with me. In fact, I sometimes take more than one.

I’ve been doing this for many years, and, as is the case with most deeply ingrained habits, I’ve become more than a little attached to it.

Recently I decided to give it up. I stopped eating in bed, and in doing so I discovered that my comforting habit had been covering up the sound of the void. The perceptions and sensations I began to experience were not necessarily comfortable. In fact, new, bigger things rarely are. But they were rewarding and profound.

As physical beings, we are primed to seek permanence and stability. But the bad news – the paradoxical news - is that physical things are inherently unstable and impermanent. Coming face to face with this fact can be scary. It can feel, indeed, like hovering over a dark and formless void. It’s important to remember that this darkness is really a much vaster and more brilliant form of light – one that’s simply too great for our senses to contain.

Many of us spend our lives attempting to block it out, to run from the darkness, or to create stability and solidity by clinging to things that are intrinsically unstable. This, however, does nothing to change the darkness, nor to expand our capacity to see. We remain trapped in a world of struggle and illusion. But if, instead, we train our eyes, bit by bit, to see the concealed light, to hear the subtle music, we can begin to set ourselves free – and to use this freedom to make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of those around us.

Do You Eat in Bed?

Whether you eat in bed or not, I am certain that there are things you do to block out the discomfort of the void. Maybe you eat or drink or work or sleep too much. Or maybe you take solace in having very strong opinions, in making yourself feel bigger and more solid by being right, criticizing, blaming or complaining. Maybe you try to lose yourself in a relationship, or maybe you avoid the vulnerability that an intimate relationship brings.

Whatever it is that you do - every now and then, just don’t. Instead, let yourself be open to something – anything - that challenges the way you’ve seen things till now. Going without that extra cookie, that glass of wine, or the need to prove your point might bring up feelings or perceptions that have something important to tell you. Giving up a protective habit is one of the most powerful ways to expand your capacity to see and hear what the habit is covering up. So listen and learn – or better yet, do something that reflects a new, higher way of being.

Maybe you can let yourself be vulnerable to someone else where you’d normally be defensive, to really listen rather than defend. Or maybe you can take an hour away from work to sit with your children and smile into their eyes, without having to accomplish anything at all. Learn some Torah, give some charity, or take a few minutes to open your heart to your Creator. These things bring more Divine light into the darkness and expand your ability to experience that light in your everyday life.

Mobile advertising for companies with small budgets

When companies are trying to advertise on the cheap one approach that might come to mind is mobile advertising. This type of marketing is great for cross country advertising as well as local advertising. When you compare other forms of media to mobile advertising it is clear that the cost is much less expensive and the retention rate is higher. It also is the form of marketing that has shown the most recent growth. The benefits for mobile marketing are great and offer fantastic visibility and impact along with very high exposure. Mobile advertising, especially when compared to that of other types of advertising includes greater benefits such as the fact that they offer high exposure, they send messages to the consumer that are consistently reinforced, it can be as targeted as you want it to be. This could be narrowed down to an area as small as a zip code. Think about it, mobile advertising covers a much bigger territory than stationary billboards.

When you think about the potential exposure that mobile marketing brings, it truly is amazing however you have to use this form of marketing in various channels. Mobile advertising is used in the form of vinyl magnetic signs to giant billboards that busses are wrapped in. Semi trucks that travel cross country are also used for mobile marketing, especially for big companies that want nationwide exposure. Consider the auto racing industry and how much advertisement they offer, that too is a form of mobile advertising. Statistics have proven that most people do read the advertisements that are on any type of vehicle, consumers also find these types of advertisements to be favorable, and many also say that they would strongly consider a purchase based on these advertisements.

Other types of advertising which include newspaper print advertisements, spot TV, magazine, radio, billboards, and mobile advertisements all have very different price tags on them in regards to cost per thousand with a half page newspaper advertisement running about $20 cost per thousand and mobile advertising is under $1 cost per thousand. That is quite a difference in price and can be just as effective. Mobile advertising is relatively newer but is also become very sophisticated and will continue to grow as an effective vehicle for advertising on the cheap. And as you have discovered, this type of advertising has its advantages. For one, mobile advertising can not be ignored, it is an in your face approach to marketing. You can not throw this away and there is no way that you can not notice it which is what makes it so effective and what makes it so appealing is the cost and the ROI. This is marketing and advertising that generate results. Perhaps this is why it is really creating a marketing buzz and more and more people are using this as part of their marketing and advertising campaigns. The options are endless when it comes to mobile advertising and new ideas are pouring in each and every day that are off the hook but the key is that these ideas are working, and that is what counts.

Gps vehicle tracking devices

It is said that had it not been for a GPS tracking device in OJ Simpson’s mobile phone, he would not have been found to be tried on his wife’s murder. A GPS vehicle tracking device is much like driving around in your car with your mobile phone. It allows a person to locate the current position of a moving vehicle or identify where it’s been and as well, where it is heading. This is ideal for chasing criminals who has just fled the scene of the crime or finding where a suspicious vehicle will be heading next.

A GPS tracking device calculates its position by measuring distances between itself and other GPS satellites. In return, the signals emitted by the satellites carry information about the GPS carrier’s location. Aside from absolute location, other civilian benefits from having GPS vehicle tracking devices include relative movement. Relative movement is useful in ships and vessels to calculate certain time distance calculations including velocity made good toward your destination and crosstrac error calculations.

Additional benefits of using GPS vehicle tracking devices is the ability to know let the carrier know exactly where their vehicle is located and its direction of travel. This technology can also create a digital view of the vehicle’s current position in a geographic map. This information can be valuable in remote locations that do not have established road names or where the vehicle may be traveling off road. More advanced GPS devices can even tell you which turn to take or which roads to take to reach a destination. Life is now easier drivers who simply get on their cars and start their engines without knowing where to go. GPS in vehicles has given everyone the ability to navigate to about any location on the earth. As a result the world is a much small place than it was just a few short years ago. Now we can find our present location, where have been or going to, with a simple click of a button.

So, if you ever wonder where your car may be, your GPS can track where it is to within a few meters. If by chance your car gets stolen, you can easily find where it is heading or where it currently is. Suppose a vehicle stops in the middle of nowhere because of some car trouble, the driver could easily ask for help, or his location could easily be tracked for emergency assistance, that is for as long as there is a signal. GPS tracking will not work without it. This feature has the potential to decrease car theft or even robberies with getaway vehicles. This can also give cheating husbands or spouses a second thought on their actions. Moving around in vehicles with GPS can very well ruin a secret affair because of its non-discreet ability to identify one’s exact location.

Having this new and useful technology, GPS tracking devices in your mobile phones or GPS vehicle tracking devices in your vehicle, we are giving away a part of our lives to be known to others for a price. This loss of privacy is of great concern may many people. Basically we are giving away information about our lives for sake of more information. If you do purchase and install GPS vehicle tracking devices, then you should expect that somebody else can use the GPS tracking information you provide for their own benefit. Unless we a doing something illegal or immoral we really have little fear from the misuse of any GPS tracking information we generate each day.

Fixed rate vs. variable rate credit cards

Although it is mostly industry practice to charge a variable rate of interest on outstanding credit balances at a certain percentage rate above Prime Lending Rate, it is possible, these days, to obtain a fixed rate credit card. So, when would you want to apply for a fixed rate credit card over a variable rate credit card?

The answer to this may not actually sound as simply as you may think. Two factor need to be borne in mind: first, what is the Prime Lending Rate at the moment; and second, what are the chances of the percentage rate plus Prime Lending Rate going above the fixed rate?

If you feel that borrowing rates are cheap at the moment and that it is unlikely that Prime Lending Rate is going to go up in the near future, then in all likelihood having the variable rate credit card is going to be more of a benefit to you than having a fixed rate credit card. However, if the opposite is true, and you believe that there is a good chance that Prime Lending Rate is going to up in the near future, there may be a very good reason for you to want to lock-in your interest rate at the current fixed rate being offered by the card provider.

One exception to the fixed rate vs. variable rate credit cards debate comes into play if you can manage to obtain a fixed rate with a card provider on the transfer of your credit card balance to a new card provider. In this circumstance it could prove to be a very useful money saving policy to agree to the fixed rate for the initial 6 or more month period as, traditionally, fixed rates for transferring balances are very low. You do, however, need to be extremely careful that any variable rate that comes into play following the fixed rate period is not excessive.

Alternatively, you need to ensure (a) that you have made as much of a repayment as is possible during your fixed rate term that you only have a minimum outstanding balance on the day the balance transfers over to a variable rate; or (b) you have the option of transferring the credit card balance outstanding to another new card provider who is also offering a very low fixed rate of interest.

In any case, these days the debate over fixed rate vs. variable rate credit cards is certainly more interesting than was ever the case previously!

Business web directories

An important tool in organizing and presenting the plethora of websites available on the internet is the use of Directories – an alternative to Search Engines that links and categorizes sites on the web. The main advantage to Directories as opposed to Search Engines is that directories are edited by humans, whereas search engines simply return automated results based on keywords which may not always be the most effective way to quickly find a website that is apropos to the topic being searched for. Websites are submitted to directories by the webmaster, where they are reviewed by neutral editors, evaluated, sorted into categories, and ranked within category according to relevance. They are then listed in a directory form that is simple to read and navigate for the average browser. For a website to create and maintain high web visibility – and therefore attract a high number of visitors – it is essential to be listed in a number of quality Directories.

The best known directories are Yahoo, Dmoz and Google, but it is worth being aware of the quality of the directory before submitting a site. The average browser will not explore beyond the second or, at most, third page of directory results for their searched for topic, but if the Directory is not of quality some websites listed in those all-important first few pages may not deserve to be there. The usefulness of Directories to return appropriate search results to be valuable to a site is under debate.

If links are being sold across the entire site, that may be indication of a lower quality Directory. Google is one of the worst culprits for targeting sites that sell links, and sites that appear to promote the Google page rank of their pages. This may not be indicative of how relevant a site is to the topic searched for – it is all too easy for crafty webmasters to manipulate keyword SEO to gain a higher Google page rank than their site deserves. This is time-wasting and frustrating for browsers, and may result in them losing patience with the Directory all together. Another common problem with Directories to be avoided is that pages within the site may be linked only internally and not to other, relevant, quality, external pages. Search Engines will not find such pages if they are low on keyword content and they will be skipped over entirely.

Dmoz, the Open Directory Project (ODP,) editors are volunteers – they are naturally third-party neutral and will review and consider each submitted website on its own merits. Each editor applicant is screened for any conflict of interest, so any search results returned by Dmoz Directories can generally be trusted. The main downside to submitting a website to Dmoz is that the submission process can be interminable – although ultimately worth it in terms of relevant traffic directed to any website included in their directory. The Yahoo! Directory rivals Dmoz for size and comprehensiveness, and was in fact Yahoo’s initial reason for existence. It has since evolved away from the fundamental classic human edited format of Directories, by instituting crawler-based listings in 2002, but remains a quality Directory that can be trusted. The Yahoo! Directory is very clearly displayed on its homepage. LookSmart, and Zeal – LookSmart’s non commercial arm – are other famous examples of quality directories.

For a website to be listed in a trustworthy Directory such as Dmoz or Yahoo! can be one of the most important quality-assurance seals of approval and can be the essential difference between focused and relevant traffic to the site and random hits by frustrated browsers.

When it is emotional intelligence and when it is not

As we all race to understand Emotional Intelligence, arguably the hottest thing on the business scene globally, there are many questions.

As ‘Ask the EQ Expert’ for a major business website, I’ve been asked:

·Isn’t ‘Emotional Intelligence’ a contradiction in terms?

·Isn’t there such a thing as too much emotion?

·It seems a ‘natural’ for relationships, but do you think emotions belong in the workplace??

·How can I learn it?

DO EMOTIONS BELONG IN THE WORKPLACE?

We do business through people, and with people. Work is relationships, and, whether you approve or not, emotions are at work. We don’t leave them at home when we come to work. We are our emotions and we aren’t a different person at work than we are at home.

THE VALUABLE FLOODGATE

Yes, there is such a thing as “too much emotion.” The benefits of studying Emotional Intelligence are that you improve your understanding of your own feelings and how they influence you and those around you (as well as those of others), and how you think and behave, and ultimately, your emotions become more modulated.

One area that sabotages us, for instance, is when we become “flooded” or “hijacked.” Something or someone makes you angry and you lose it. You might lash out, or withdraw, get physical and do something rash, use poor judgment, or sit in apoplectic silence (and then sabotage yourself), but whatever your reaction, what’s happened is that the flood of anger has disabled your thinking brain, just when you need it the most. The aftermath can include regret, as well as fatigue, stomach pains, headaches, back aches, diarrhea … you name it.

Research is showing us there’s a “brain” in our intestines as well as in our heads that’s hooked up to our emotions (via the powerful vagus nerve) … but we knew that. That’s why we have “visceral” reactions to things, and why we can always check in with our bodies to see how we’re feeling, if our heads are fooling us with rationalizations. (i. e., If he’s really such a "nice guy", why is your stomach in knots when you have to talk to him?)

TOO LITTLE?

On the other hand, if you think you’ve checked your emotions at the front desk, #1 they’re more likely to sabotage you because you aren’t mindful, and #2, you’re missing a great ally. Emotions give us information. One Emotional Intelligence competency, for instance, is intuition. Without the information you get from your “gut feeling” or “basic instincts” you’ll call many plays wrong.

Emotional Intelligence is the interface between thinking and feeling. We can think through the data, but it can only take us so far; otherwise, we’d always be able to pick a winner!

And #3, if you aren’t mindful about emotions you will be less effective with people.

This does not mean turning you into a bleeding heart, or that screaming or crying on the job is the desired result. In fact, it’s about managing emotions; understanding your own and those of others, and responding, not reacting. This gives you choices!

Why more effective with people? Motivation is an example. It’s not a thinking word, as you know if you’ve ‘talked till you were blue in the face’ trying to convince someone of something with logic and reason. Ultimately we are moved by our emotions, and we need to connect with others to access this. This has been said to be the difference between a “leader” and a “manager,” which is a fair theoretical distinction, but in reality people’s job titles don’t always reflect what they do, or, more importantly, how they are.

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING?

Why moderation? Let’s take a look at Empathy, one of the Emotional Intelligence competencies. If you’re low in Empathy, you need it, and it can be learned. Hook up with a certified EQ coach and get into it.

If you have a strong ability at Empathy, you need to be able to use it as a tool; in other words, you use IT, it doesn’t use YOU. It matters how you manage it. Understanding the feelings of the other person is valuable. Getting infected by them is not. Neither is practicing Empathy with someone who is toxic.

In his book, “Coping with Toxic Managers, Subordinates … and Other Difficult People: Using Emotional Intelligence to Survive and Prosper,” ( amazon. com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0131409956/susandunnmome-20 ) Roy H. Lubit, a psychiatrist, identifies the behaviours of five types of toxic managers: narcissistic, unethical, aggressive, rigid and impaired. He suggests strategies for protecting yourself. Yes, protecting yourself.

When your Intuition (an Emotional Intelligence competency) informs you that you’re dealing with someone toxic, it’s time to take care of yourself, not try and “fix” them. People with strong Empathy often make this mistake. Lubit maintains these toxic behaviours are the manifestations of depression and fear. The Empathic person will pick up on the depression and fear, which is indeed worthy of compassion, but not at the expense of harmful behaviours coming your way. Misapplied Empathy and misunderstanding of how to use and enjoy it, leave you wide open to abuse, as well as likely to stick around too close and too long. “Understanding” the underlying feelings does not excuse the toxic behaviours, nor compel you to tolerate them.

Other Emotional Intelligence competencies would then come into play, such as Personal Power, Intuition, and Integrated Self.

Toxic behaviours are not confined to managers. You will meet them roaming around many offices and your ability to work around them will impact your career. As has been said, your EQ is more important to your success (health and happiness) than your IQ.

Julian Barling, Ph. D., professor of organizational behaviour at Queen’s University, Kingston, says aggression in the workplace is more likely when 2 factors are present: psychologically unhealthy people and psychologically unhealthy organizations. Dr. Barling feels it’s easier to try and make organizations healthier than to try and weed out psychologically unhealthy individuals.

With Empathy, you can understand where they’re coming from, but it’s your Intuition that tells you it’s not a problem to be solved, but rather a fact to be dealt with. It's Personal Power that allows you to take care of yourself rather than feeling “hopeless and helpless.”

HOW DO YOU LEARN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Reading about Emotional Intelligence is a starting point, but to really ‘get it’ you have to put the competencies into practice. Coaching is the suggested venue for the crucial active-learning stage. Social and interpersonal skills can’t be practiced in a vacuum, and you need feedback.

Emotional Intelligence is about understanding and valuing emotions; managing them; and integrating them comfortably with thinking processes for the information, motivation, enrichment and connection they give us.

Most people find Emotional Intelligence to be “the missing piece” and the best way to understand it, is to experience it.

It starts with bed-dancing

This “Bed-Dancing” concept often gets a few chuckles… but I want you to stay with me on this one as I explain exactly what it is (and isn’t) and how you can incorporate this in your exercise routine today.

I’ll begin by expressing how essential Bed-Dancing was in my life right after I had the RNY gastric bypass bariatric weight-loss surgery: VERY ESSENTIAL. That’s shooting straight from the hip!

Definition of Bed-Dancing: “the exercise activity that incorporates established exercise movements while positioned on your back in the bed to minimize the stress and strains on joints and muscles when a person is morbidly obese.” This is the best brief definition I could come up with since I am nowhere near a Webster genius.

Right after my surgery, I knew that it was important to MOVE MY BODY and begin to exercise. The biggest benefit I saw at the time was that it increased my blood circulation that was necessary to help my surgical wounds to heal. This was my main motivation. And when I weighed 317 pounds, there was no way I was “eager” to incorporate an exercise routine because my body was so large, and my arthritis so painful, I just could not bear putting such stress on my joints and muscles at that heavy weight.

I had a master plan to put on my favorite “high-spirited” CD (Latin music makes me feel like dancing), put on my sweats, and I went into my bedroom as I announced to the household, “Don’t bother me for one hour….no matter what,” then shut the door. As I began to “dance” to the tunes, OH MY GOLLY… I couldn’t last more than five minutes! My incision hurt, my joints hurt, and I collapsed on my bed, falling deeper in disappointment that I could not see myself achieving an exercise routine.

But soon, as the Latin CD kept spinning, I found myself “moving” to the music while I was in bed… WOW… I then thought, “Hey, I can DANCE on my BACK!” So with legs and arms in the air flailing like a floppy fish… I discovered how someone who weighed 317 pounds COULD exercise… but not the traditional way… but by Bed-Dancing! Thus, the birth of my newly-found method launched me into a very SUCCESSFUL exercise routine that I could do often without putting stress on my joints!

But be cautious when you talk about Bed-Dancing to others… they automatically begin to chuckle at what you call the standard “bed activity” now. (blushing yet?)

What you need for Bed-Dancing:

• A bedroom with a bed and a bedroom door that you can shut so you can bed-dance in private. Be sure to announce to the household that this is YOUR TIME and they are capable of getting along without you for at least the length of a CD. If not, they are far too dependant on you!

• A CD that excites you into “dancing”. A CD is better over a cassette tape or radio because you can “program” your music selection to skip, repeat, or play at random your tunes according to what you want to dance to.

• An exercise outfit such as sweats, t-shirt and shorts, or even your slip. Since you’ll be behind closed doors, you can wear whatever you want. However, when you actually have an “outfit” set aside for exercise, the mind gets in gear and stays more focused on what you are telling it to do… and that’s EXERCISE.

• An attitude to do Bed-Dancing. This is vital too. Keep you movements simple but aggressive, meaning that you aren’t making complicated moves with your arms and legs, but rather you are making the simple moves in a forceful and deliberate way much as a tap dancer or ballet dancer uses simple moves but with controlled and deliberate body disciplines.

So as you can see, the equipment you need for Bed-Dancing is minimal and low cost since you already have most of what you need as these things are probably already around the house. If you lack in a dancing CD, go get one… most cities have “used” CD shops. And as for your exercise outfit, you can find sweats at your local thrift store. And if you like Bed-Dancing in your “unmentionables”, that’s okay too…. Whatever works for you!

Bed-Dancing helped me begin my “serious” exercise routine which eventually morphed into exercising on my feet and even to full-fledged real dancing again as the pounds fell off! I still Bed-Dance occasionally to get me “started”, then I’m up on my feet and going to town!

Mortgages. short term advice

There are some new types of home loans coming onto the market which are being advertised at present. Several of the mortgage companies are offering variation of them and they are being marketed as “lifetime” loans. So might this be the end of the short-term mortgage? Not necessarily so, it appears that there are still bargains out there for those prepared to shop around.

Mortgage brokers usually advise discounted short term mortgages and advise clients to regularly shop around after the two year discount has come to an end to obtain an even better deal. These clients are known to the insurers as “rate tarts”. But who can blame them for obtaining the best possible deal, especially as the broker does all the work for them, making the whole procedure painless and trouble free.

First of all, if you need to borrow over Ј150,000 the above advice is still without a doubt the very best and asking your broker to shop around for discounted rates is, in our opinion, essential.

For borrowers of less than Ј150,000, some of these new mortgages appearing on the market initially sound tempting. They are classed as low-rate “lifetime” loans. Abbey and Woolwich are two of the building societies offering flat-rate low cost home loans, amongst others.

The Woolwich has a lifetime tracker mortgage rate which has a guarantee of staying at 0.19 percentage points above base rate. At present the Bank of England’s base rate is 4.50%, therefore the rate is 4.69%.

Conversely, the Portman Building Society’s two year fixed rate plan presently stands at 4.19%, still cheaper than the Woolwich “lifetime”. You do, however, have to factor in the cost of shopping around, which we have listed:

·Legal fees Ј350 on average.

·Application fee Ј499.

·Valuation fee Ј300 on average.

·Deeds release fee Ј199.

This is worked out on a loan of Ј150,000. The above sums come to just under Ј1,350 and the saving on interest over the Woolwich comes out at Ј1,500. This means that there is a very small saving on the Portman deal at two years. You would need to find another tempting deal and be ready to switch to it at the end of this period as a 6.5 per cent rate would come into force otherwise.

Abbey’s Flexible Plus tracker has a slightly higher rate than the Woolwich, at 5.09% but, as the name implies, it is very flexible and will allow you to reduce the amount of money borrowed by offsetting your mortgage and also permitting you to withdraw money from the mortgage. One advantage is that you can make use of the mortgage as a type of savings account. Money withdrawn is charged at the mortgage rate.

To sum up, these new loans do seem to be competitive, but the mortgage market alters all the time if you’re out for the very best deals, check with your on-line broker and find out what’s available out there. They’ll search the whole market and get you the very best deal. That’s what they’re there for!

Understanding scoring rules in bowling

Score rules are the basic rules in bowling. They determine who won the game or how they got their scores. There are guidelines that need to be followed in scoring a bowling game.

There are frames that are used in scoring the number of pins that were knocked down during the delivery. The frame is shaped in a square with a little square box in the upper right corner of the square. When a strike is scored, no marking or counts are made in the boxes. However, the pins that were knocked down on the first delivery are scored in the box next to the small square. The pins knocked down on the second delivery are listed on the smaller box inside the square.

A strike occurs when all 10 pins are knocked down on the first delivery. The square is then marked with the letter “x” on the upper right corner of the box. The score is then made by counting 10 for the strike and adding it to the number of pins knocked down on the next two deliveries.

Two strikes made consecutively are scored as a “double”. The score for the first strike is then 20 and the number of pins knocked down on the first delivery before the second strike. Strikes that are made on three successive attempts are called a “turkey” and they are scored as triple. The score of the initial strike is 30. The maximum score that a player can get is 300. To do this, he needs to make 12 strikes consecutively.

There is also a spare, which is scored when the pins that were left standing after the first delivery were knocked down on the second delivery. Both deliveries should fall in the same frame. A spare is then marked with a “/” in the smaller square on the upper right corner of the frame. The count for every spare is scored 10 added to the number of pins knocked down after the next delivery.

An open frame occurs when a player was unable to knock down all of the 10 pins after the two deliveries. A split may happen when the head pin was knocked down but there were lower pins that remained standing creating two separate set of pins.

Scoring may be hard to understand especially if the player is a beginner. It would be easier for him to enjoy the game first before understanding the scoring guidelines. After frequent visits to the bowling lanes, he will eventually learn to understand the scoring rules of bowling.

Types of discounts that ruin travel bargains

Travel bargains can be found through the internet, or through publications such as the local newspaper, magazines or booklets left at welcome centers throughout the United States. The types of travel bargains listed in each might seem like superb deals that will save travelers lots of money on the many places they will visit in their travels while on vacation for a month. Not all travel bargains will hold up to their name because some will contain stipulations that dig deep into the savings.

A golfer might take advantage of a weekend golf package at a famous resort. The coupon books sent by a friend by include dinner for two at the end of the day. The coupon book might stipulate that additional diners will cost more, and golfers will be amazed to find that the charges are more than the cost of the room. Some dinner entries can incur additional charges because the additional diner bill will ring up separately and incur dining room charges and a tip for the waiter.

While some hotel discounts might allow guests to stay longer than usual, many hotel guests will wish that they had never left home. Additional days at a hotel resort might be blissful if certain amenities like massages are used, but hotel guests might not realize all of the charges that will be applied to such travel bargain treatments. Some massage therapists will charge by the hour and again for every luxurious oil that is used during the massage. Some sensations are better left alone because the final bill could make all the relaxed feelings go away the moment it is received.

People might use the telephone in the hotel room to search for travel bargains in the local area. Tourists can call the front desk and ask for local tourist attractions and the local number. Some tourists do not stop to think about the telephone charges that will incur every time they pick up the receiver. Many resort hotels are setting trends for charging for all types of service, and it might pay to ask for the cost of things that used to be free in the past.

Some travel bargains will become quite apparent when booking agents tell tourists what they can exclude from the bill during the booking process. Those travelers that have no use for the pool, the golf course, and limousine service to the airport the following morning or room service that night will find lower bills at checkout time at the hotel desk. Travelers will be introduced to such charges only once in a lifetime and will know from that point on the necessary steps to avoid them.

Booking agents can quickly become the reason why some vacations are ruined. Some agents do not clearly understand the discount offering that is valid during a specific period and will arrange for flights that leave at the wrong time of the day. Some booking agents will secure rental cars that are not upgraded to the correct size and travelers must endure cramped spaces for the holiday period they are traveling in because no other rentals are available that will meet the travel bargains listed in the coupon offer in their possession.
